Reconstructing terrestrial ice sheet retreat dynamics from hummocky topography using multiscale evidence: An example from central Ireland

چکیده
The research reported here combines high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) derived from airborne LiDAR with ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys and macro- micro-scale sedimentological analyses to study the geomorphology internal structure composition of ridges mounds within an area hummocky topography in Brosna basin, central Ireland. Our evidence indicates that much consists fragmented mega-scale glacial lineations (MSGLs) indicating a phase accelerated ice flow, overlain by groups small composed subglacially till sediment gravity flow deposits. Subtle differences ridge morphology indicate they may be multi-genetic formed both ice-marginally as moraines ribbed moraine. We interpret MSGL-ridge associations subglacial bedform continuum reflecting evolution deforming bed brittle deformation, due changing thermal hydrological conditions at ice-bed interface during sheet retreat. Adjacent glaciofluvial landforms initial en- supra-glacial meltwater drainage, possibly directly related basal thermal/hydrological characteristics formation. Subsequently conduit system evolved, later retreat involved formation ice-marginal ridges. partially preserved landsystem reflects polythermal active temperate marginal zone, rather than stagnating margin previously assumed for this area. work demonstrates usefulness identifying changes deglaciation importance combining multiple strands reconstructing processes landform construction.

متن کاملWindblown Pliocene diatoms and East Antarctic Ice Sheet retreat
Marine diatoms in tillites along the Transantarctic Mountains (TAMs) have been used to suggest a diminished East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) during Pliocene warm periods. Updated ice-sheet modelling shows significant Pliocene EAIS retreat, creating marine embayments into the Wilkes and Aurora basins that were conducive to high diatom productivity and rapid accumulation of diatomaceous sediments....
متن کاملTracking millennial-scale Holocene glacial advance and retreat using osmium isotopes: Insights from the Greenland ice sheet
High-resolution Os isotope stratigraphy can aid in reconstructing Pleistocene ice sheet fluctuation and elucidating the role of local and regional weathering fluxes on the marine Os residence time. This paper presents new Os isotope data from ocean cores adjacent to the West Greenland ice sheet that have excellent chronological controls. Cores MSM-520 and DA00-06 represent distal to proximal si...
متن کاملAntarctic Ice Sheet dynamics through the Neogene from evidence in the ANDRILLâ•fiMcMurdo Ice Shelf Project drillcore (AND-1B)
ANDRILL completed its first season in 2006-07 drilling AND-1B through the McMurdo Ice Shelf (MIS) to a depth of 1,285m below the sea floor, a record for Antarctic margin drilling, with 99% recovery. The alternating glacial-interglacial sediment packages interbedded with volcanics provide a uniquely detailed record of Antarctic glacial and climatic change through the Neogene. This paper summariz...
